About The Language of fashion

The Language of Fashion blog post header image 1930s dresses.

Translating the past...

If I had a dollar for every time I've come across a sewing term, confusing color name, or strange word in my time preserving historical fashion documents, I'd have enough money to build my own museum by now.

Wouldn't that be something?

Instead, as a student of language, I've been amassing a large library designed around translating all of that sometimes cryptic text into something I, or any other garment maker might find useful.

I've drawn from dozens of sources but the main body of this work is built around Mary Brooks Pickens' The Language of Fashion but this dictionary also includes translated non-English words often used in fashion.

The A to Z of it all.
