Picken Square Ladies' Tailor Square Sewing Pattern Drafting Dressmaking Tool

Antique Picken Square Ladies' Tailor Square Sewing Pattern Drafting Dressmaking Tool - Digital Print-at-Home Reproduction

This is a pdf copy of a specially-designed Tailor’s Square used by the Woman's Institute of Domestic Arts and Sciences from 1916.

The Picken Square was designed for the purpose of assisting those who sew and draft patterns in laying out drafts for patterns in the quickest possible way. It is similar in appearance to an ordinary L square but it contains different graduations that serve to lighten the labor of the user and keep them from working out fractions in making measurements. In addition, it contains a number of curves, based on the curves of the human form, that will enable anyone to get perfect lines for figures of any shape. The square is 27" at the longest point.

It is a two-sided tool, both of which are included at full-scale in this reproduction. The Picken square is essential for pattern drafting using any of the Woman’s Institute Dressmaking Books. Some of the pictures show how the tool is used in other books which you can find in our shop.

Many dressmaking books from the late 1800s to early 1900s called for the use of a tailor’s square shaped like this one and you may find it useful in your historical sewing pattern drafting. This pdf includes BOTH sides of the square so that you may flip it about and measure however you like.
